What’s an Empire league?

We thought you’d never ask! An Empire league is a dynasty league with a few fun twists.

Dynasty leagues are leagues in which owners have a normal draft in Year 1, and then keep the players on their roster, in theory, for the rest of their careers. Owners can upgrade their rosters through trades (both in season and during the offseason) and through the annual rookie & free agent draft.

See below for more details on how Empire leagues differ from dynasty leagues.

UNIQUE EMPIRE LEAGUE FEATURES

The Empire Pot

Each year, roughly half of the league pot is set aside into an “Empire Pot.” This is a rolling pot of money that continues to build, year after year, until one owner wins the league in back-to-back seasons.

It’s a fun way of playing high stakes fantasy football without the high stakes, as the Empire Pot can grow quickly by the fourth or fifth season.

For example, in our $200 Empire Leagues, an owner who wins their league twice in a row in years 5 and 6 would win $5,100 in Year 6 ($600 for the current year title, $4,500 from the Empire Pot).

The End

Dynasty leagues are a lot of fun, but they inevitably get stale. Owners with non-competitive rosters drop out or stop actively trying to improve their teams. One franchise becomes so dominant that the rest of the league bails with no hope of competing for the title. Whatever the reason, playing in a stale league is simply no fun.

Empire leagues, in contrast, have a defined end point. Once the league is won in back-to-back seasons, the Empire Pot is paid out and the league ends. Owners are free to start again from scratch with a new first-year draft, but the existing league ceases to exist.

Fraud & Collusion Prevention

With the potential for large Empire Pots accumulating over years (or even decades), we’ve been very careful to implement a series of controls to prevent fraud or collusion between two owners.

First and foremost, all finances are handled by LeagueSafe. Protecting fantasy league funds is LeagueSafe’s only business – you can rest assured your league’s Empire Pot is safe and sound.

Secondly, the reigning league champ can’t make any trades. This prevents other owners from making a side deal with the champ to funnel the best players to the champ’s team in exchange for a piece of the pot.
